Nanjing's Great Four and the Retro Movement
【Abstract】The Retro Movement in the Ming Dynasty had a far-reaching influence over the academic circle. Gu Lin and Zhu Yingdeng of the “Nanjing's Great Four” were its advocates. Gu and Zhu later became epigones of the Retro Movement after they went to Beijing and started their career and their relationship with the “ Former Seven Scholars” lasted for decades. The other two members of the“ Nanjing's Great Four”，Chen Yi and Wang Wei were also afected by the Retro Movement, especially Chen. His aesthetical orientation was quite similar to that of the “Former Seven Scholars”. Nevertheless，there were some divergences between the “Nanjing' s Great Four” and the “Former Seven Scholars” in terms of literary pursuit，for example the Four emphasized in-depth study of literature of the Six Dynasties. And，it was such divergences that made the relationship between the “ Nanjing' s Great Four” and the Retro Movement more subtle and interesting.
