The Secularization of the Study of Zhuangzi in the Six Dynasties and the Satire of Ji Kang
【Abstract】Owing to the secularization of the study of Zhuangzi in the Wei and the Jin dynasties, the gulf between Ji Kang and other scholars in the Six dynasties was widened , as the scholars could not completely understand and sympathize with Ji Kang’s behavior of maintaining his Confucian belief. They generally attributed Ji Kang’s tragic fate to his failure of understanding and fulfilling Zhuangzi’s theory. As a result, most comments about Ji Kang in the Six dynasties were satire. Since the Tang and the Song dynasties, under the influence of Confucian revival, many people advocated explaining Zhuangzi’s theory by Confucianism, Ji Kang was reappraised. He was praised because of his loyalty to the country, and the viewpoints of other scholars in the six dynasties were criticized. It is noteworthy that, the satire about Ji Kang still usually appeared in the scholar’s works, as a reflection of their complicated ideas. In conclusion, the comment of Ji Kang can help us observe the change of the ancient scholars ’ psychology.
