From Classical Chinese to the Modem Vernacular ： The Impact of the Reform and the Abolition of Imperial Examination on Chinese Cultural Transformation
【Abstract】The popularization of classical Chinese for a long time is not only related to change of ancient literature and ideology, but also largely promoted by imperial examinations. It had a far-reaching impact on culture, education, society and politics in ancient China and the whole East Asia. In the Late Qing Dynasty, the crisis of imperil examination's style is the focal point and concentration expression of the crisis in talent-training, education, and politics. Ils roots lie in the defects of the stereotyped style of the exam, the military aggression and the shock of the language and culture from the West, and the deepening crisis of Qing's rule. The reform and the abolition of the examinations was a key to the transformation from classical Chinese to the vernacular. The practical value, academic status, and educational impact of classical Chinese had declined rapidly since it lost the protection of imperial examination, thus, the modem Chinese vernacular has become the mainstream style, which has opened the reform movement of the Chinese language and characters for more than half a century.
