Immigration, Legends and Ethnic Memories： Narrative Cultures of Southern Chinese Ethnic Groups in the Perspective of Ethnography

【Abstract】The development of ethnic cultures in Southern China was closely related to the integration of the Han and other minorily ethnic groups. During the process of integration, southern ethnic memories such as legends, customs, rituals，etc. were created，among which Baxingrumin(八姓入闽 )，Paogongwang(跑贡王），Sheliangjian(射梁箭}，Tuqiujiuhuangdi( 土酋救皇帝）were typical representations. These kinds of memories are not usually found in the literature of official histories, but they exist in the minor narratives of ethnic cultures. It is argued that such memories have within them the essential nature of ethnic groups, embody anthropologically meaningful perspective of the locals, and depict vividly the events that took place in the history of ethnic integration. This paper suggests that researchers pay close attention to such minor narratives of ethnic cultures in their study of the history of southern Chinese ethnic groups.
