The Preliminary Study of the Tang Legend Kaihe Ji
【Abstract】Kaihe Ji is the first Tang legend which focuses on Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty excavating the Canal. It has attracted little attention so far in the academic field. This essay tries to analyze this fiction from literature and history aspects. It is historical fiction that comes and develops from previous dynasty's literature and contributes a lot to the developement of later fiction and historical novels though it is not perfect. Although many details like the time of starting excavating, the number of workers, the depictions about Dianjiao girls are not in accordance with the history, we still cannot disregard it. Behind the distorted facts, there are national thought and traditional value orientation which cannot be easily changed.
