Fluoroethylene Carbonate as an Electrolyte Additive for Improving the Performance of Mesocarbon Microbead Electrode

In this paper, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) was used as a kind of film-forming electrolyte additive for lithium-ion battery. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) were used to study the influence of FEC additive on the electrochemical properties of mesocarbon microbead (MCMB)/Li cell. The results of cyclic voltammertry show that FEC was reduced at a higher potential than the electrolyte. The performance of MCMB/Li cell was improved obviously even when small amounts of FEC (2 vol. %) was present. The surface morphologies and chemical composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formed on MCMB electrodes cycled in 1M LiPF6/EC: DMC: EMC (1: 1: 1, v: v: v) with and without FEC were studied by SEM and XPS analysis. The results show that a thin, low-resistive and uniform SEI film was formed on the surface of MCMB electrode, which cause the excellent cyclability of the electrode. These results confirmed the capability of FEC to improve the cell performance. The decomposition mechanism of FEC was proposed here according to the results obtained.
