Merging and validation of multi-sensor remote sensing sea surface temperature in the China Sea

Using five kinds of satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) from infrared radiometers (AVHRR, MODIS/Aqua, MODIS/Terra) and microwave radiometers (TMI, AMSR), a set of high-quality, cloud-free, high-resolution (1/20°) merged SST product was generated through an optimum interpolation scheme. The area of merged SST product (OISST) [0-42°N, 95-150°E] covers the whole China Sea as well as the western North Pacific Ocean. Its time scale is daily. Validation with in situ SST and comparison with the OSTIA (Operational sea surface temperature and sea ice analysis) product showed that the data quality of OISST and OSTIA merged product was almost the same. They had good relationship with in-situ SST in the deep sea area with the root-mean square error (RMS) ～0.8～0.9K However, in the very nearshore water, these two merged products were overestimated. The RMS could be up to >1.9K Integrated with the real-time in situ SST into merging process was suggested to improve the data quality for the nearshore water. ? 2011 IEEE.
