Alfred Prufrock” by T. S. Eliot. It points out that the poem is a dramatic monologue of strong modernist tone. This poem shows the character of the speaker most clearly with its plot. It describes the consciousness of a timid middle-aged man and displays the three worlds typical of a modern mans existence: the vulgar and idle external world at dusk that is meaningless and etherized at the entrance to the hell; the inner world that is split, lonely, romantic, doubtful,and hesitant; and the imaginary world that is passive and cowardly and mixed with sensual desire and restriction of social rules. This kind of person is dissatisfied with the reality, esirous of a glorious future,but dare not pursue a broader, richer, and more vigorous life due to his own mental restrictions. In essence, the poem is the self - portrayal of a modern man that has lost his faith and belief, and is cowardly and full of doubts.
