Phytochemical research on mangrove plants 1 Lipids and carbohydrates in propagules of ten mangrove species of China

Lipid and carbohydrates in the propagules of ten mangrove species of China have been investigated. Despite smaller amounts of crude fat (mostly less than 6%), 14 kinds of constituent fatty acids were identified. Fatty acids were characterized by greater amounts of caprylic (20-80%) and tetracosanoic (10-30%) acids, and total amounts of greatly unsaturated fatty acids (mostly 20-30%). Six kinds of sugars were found in these propagules. The results also showed larger amounts of reducing sugars (more than 5%) in Sonneratia ovata Backer, Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh., and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lamk., of total sugars (12%) in S. ovata, Sonneratia caseolaris (L.) Engl. and A. marina, and of pectin (about 3%), ester methoxyl contents (6-7%) and galacturonic acid (66% and 80%) of pectin in S. ovata and S. caseolaris. All of the above-listed plants are expected to be promising resources for sugars and pectin.
