n a graphite arc-discharge in low-pressure helium, the carbon tetrachloride was added as foreign gas partly instead of helium for appraising the influence of carbon chlorine on fullerenes C60 and C70 production. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrum analysis, a small quantity of carbon tetrachloride was revealed to be markedly favorable for fullerenes growth in the graphite arc-discharge reaction, and up to 31% yield of C60 was synthesis in the reaction atmosphere of 10torr carbon tetrachloride and 300torr helium. The proposed process may be applicable to high-yield production of fullerenes in large-scale. In addition, the experimental evidences may provide valuable clues for understanding fullerenes formation.
