Landscapes of Taiwan's Salt Zone and Multiple Origins of Colonial Modernity
Abstract
【Abstract】Poets in the salt zone represented an important literary genre in Taiwan during the period of Japanese occupation. The local landscapes they wrote about were the product of the intersection of multiple histories and cultures. The poets insightfully observed and reflected on the process and consequences of the encroachment of rural Taiwan by modernization. In their modernity issues, multiple threads are discernable. The first was the criticism of local customs from the perspective of enlightenment modernity. The second was the exploration of the unequal power structure behind colonial modernity, including colonial plundering in the name of modernization and class contradictions caused by capital encroaching on the rural areas. The third was the rediscovery of the value of local history and ethics, which led to the formation of antimodern modernity under the appeal of resisting colonialism. The complex attitudes of the poets in the salt zone towards modernity produced a contradictory and mixed form of pastoral songs and industrial modernization, sentimental emotions and rational criticism. However, different from the hybridity identified by Homi Bhabha, there were clear historical contexts behind the different discourses of modernity in the salt zone.
