A Study of Landscape Writing and Historical Narrative of Gulangyu Island in Taiwan Newspapers and Periodicals during the Japanese Occupation Period

There were a lot of landscape writings and historical narratives about Gulangyu published in Taiwan newspapers and periodicals during the 50 years of Japanese occupation of Taiwan. The authors＇ identity sector is roughly divided into two categories. One includes the Taiwanese traditional literati, monks and journalists living in Xiamen, while the other embraces the Japanese dramatists, journalists and editors living in Taiwan. Intellectuals with different background of identities show similar natural concern for Gulangyu with different historical accounts, which enriches the contents of Gulangyu writings. These writings and narratives described in newspaper and periodicals are of great importance. They vividly restore the close cultural interaction between Fujian and Taiwan even during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. On the other hand, as the modem concession of powers, the history of Gulangyu could serve as the epitome of modem Chinese history, and at the same time, represent the fine degree of the ＂ infiltration＂ work by the Japanese cultural colonialism into the cultural circles of its destination. Today, Gulangyu, one of the world cultural heritages, enjoys more of its humanistic flavor and atmosphere because of these writings and narratives.
