Looking at Taiwan from Kaohsiung: the Film Production in Kaohsiung and the Imagination of Subject Consciousness
Due to the film assistance program offered by the Kaohsiung municipal government, more and more films have been shot in Kaohsiung since 2000, telling new ＂stories of Kaohsiung＂. Through the north-south confrontation structure between Kaohsiug and Taibei and based on the local, grassroots and edge positions, these stories often express the helplessness and resistance of Kaohsiung because of the economic decline. I Can＇t Live Without You and Elena, as one of the two representative works, which expand the film spatial performance and cultural political connotation in Kaohsiong, have also constructed the metaphor of Kaohsiung above Taiwan while emphasizing on the localization image. On the other hand, Kaohsiung＇s struggle has been carrying a new imagination of subject consciousness. However, due to the lack of social relations analysis and intervention, the reproduction of social contradictions in these new Kaohsiung stories only stays in the abstract binary structure, unable to provide a realistic solution to the problem.
