The Legendary Life of Shi Jianwu: The Image Construction from“Celestial Shi”to “the First Non-governmental Developer of Penghu Islands”

Shi Jianwu,a poet in Tang Dynasty,is well-known as ‘the First Non-governmental Developer of Penghu Islands'. However, this controversial image has experienced a long period of time before it is formed. In Song Dynasty, the Taoists described Shi Jianwu as a celestial. Later one of his poems depicting his imagination about the tradition and culture of an ethnic group named‘Daoyi'was included in some geographical books and copied privately by many people, after which the poem was then mistaken as a masterpiece about Penghu Islands. Consequently, people began to believe that Shi Jianwu had once been to Penghu Islands. In 1910 s,Lian Heng,in his famous book‘History of Taiwan',even made up a story, imagining that Shi Jianwu and his family had once immigrated into Penghu Islands. Ever since then, this story has gone through different interpretations and good polishes from generation to generation. In fact,Penghu Islands were developed by coastal ancient people from Fujian area in Southern Song Dynasty.
