Common interests of both sides across the Taiwan Strait have been an important topic of research for the academia across the Strait. This article argues that as a key approach to fostering a common identity, conceptualizing and constructing cross-Strait common interests will greatly enhance their common cultural and social-group identity. Four major issues are discussed in the article, including 1) basic elements of the common interests across the Strait; 2) basic principles in tackling the interest gaps across the Strait as well as fostering mutual respect, inclusiveness and cultural integration; 3) joint efforts of both sides to construct common interests by enhancing social-group interaction;and 4) roles of major actors on both sides across the Strait.
