This paper provides an analysis by putting together the Great Rite Controversy in the imperial court, the expedition against Vietnam, and the local politics of taming chieftains during the Jiajing Period of the Ming dynasty. The ideology that focused on family lineage and legitimacy of power transfer was gradually taking form during the Great Rite Controversy. The ideology not only influenced the methods adopted by the central empire in dealing with usurping events in Vietnam, but also caused the imperial court to pay special attention to the legitimacy of power transfer in chieftains' families. In this paper, the life experiences and strategies of different persons( or groups) under this ideology were revealed as well.
