Huang Zongxi's The Records of Ming Scholars is a masterpiece of traditional Chinese academic history. While it is influenced by the tradition of the compilation of academic history in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, it has various degrees of development and improvement upon other scholars' previous achievements. When the naming of the book shows Huang Zongxi's consideration of previous traditions, it also manifests Huang's own belief. This book, together with Huang Zongxi's Cases in Ming History, Cases in Ming Prose Works, and Cases in Ming Poetry, establishes Huang Zongxi's classification and synthesizing of Ming culture. Huang Zongxi advocated diversified approaches in human studies, believing that Confucianism could be, and should be, capable of multiple directions of development, even though he still believed that people should adhere to the orthodox essence of Confucian traditions. The compilation of The Records of Ming Scholars is a continuation of past traditions, but it is also a manifestation of diversification. While the sources of the book may include others' findings, it also features Huang Zongxi's analyses, supplementation, and correction of errors.
