The Impact of the South China Sea Arbitration Case on the Taiwan Authorities＇ Claim to the South China Sea

With the alternation of the KMT and the DPP ruling, the Taiwan authorities＇ policies towards the South China Sea have undergone profound changes from resolutely safeguarding the sovereignty over the South China Sea to giving up rights and interests within the Nine-Dash Line. The Ma Ying-Jeou administration has given high attention to the arbitration case unilaterally filed by Philippines and claimed the sovereignty and rights over the South China Sea islands and waters, while the DPP authorities tend to be more negative and fuzzy in this regard. On the other hand, the arbitral award not only directly affects the nature of waters within the Nine-Dash Line, but also indirectly changes the ownership of part of its islands, which will directly damage rights and interests of the Taiwan authorities in the South China Sea, and at the same time, make a profound impact on their South China Sea policy.
