Is Dancing Really Dynamic Sculpture?

The saying of“Dancing Is Dynamic Sculpture” is rather a metaphor than a definition. It is an integrated analogy based on a partial similarity. The similarity lies in the fact that both dancing and sculpture are related to postures. However, due to the difference oftheir media, dancing and sculpture are quite different and sometimes even completely contrary in appearance. Posture occupies the total of sculpture with a permanent significance, but in dancing it is only an element without independent value and its meanings are constantly changing. Dancing is “dynamic” , not “sculptural”. Sculpture is an art of representation while dancing is an art of presentation; sculpture is an art of portraying while dancing is an art of acting; sculpture is the reflection of Apollonian spirit while dancing is the reflection of Dionysian spirit. These differences make dancing more closely related to music than to sculpture.
