Putnam's semantics, against traditional one, denies the idea that meaning is a kind of fixed object, which can be understood only by mind and determines reference, and suggests that reference determines meaning. Related to this, Putnam proposes a series of points such as the theory of division of linguistic labor, the causal theory of reference and scientific essentialism, which have had a strong impact on Anglo-American philosophy and won a high reputation for him. This essay is an interpretation of Putnam's theory of semantics and an analysis of its gain and lose.
