The currents of literary thoughts are responses to modernity. Owing to the outwardness and lagging behind of China’s modernity, a gap exists between the western trends of literary thoughts and their introduction into China. Influenced by many currents of world literary thoughts, Chinese literature is no longer simple but quite complicated. In the process of accepting foreign thoughts, a misreading occurred, especially the misreading of romanticism and realism. The conflict between China’s modernity and modern nation-state has led to the reverse and repetition of literary thoughts such as neo-classicism that takes the place of Enlightenment of May the Fourth and the rise of the new era Enlightenment, thus resulting in the frailty and falling behind of China’s anti-modernity literary thoughts. Romanticism, realism and modernism have never become the main currents in China.
