The Classicist Tendency of Xu Zhimo's Aesthetic Concepts in His Later Years

Similar to Liang Shiqiu and Wen Yiduo, Xu Zhimo had somehow changed from romanticism to classicism in aesthetic concepts in his later years. It can be seen mainly in his The Attitude of the Crescent, Autumn and the Preface to the Collection of Tigers, though it has so far failed to attract the attention from researchers. The reason for the change is that he, like Wen Yiduo, was influenced by Irving Babbit's neo-humanism advocated by Liang Shiqiu after 1926. The classicist tendency is manifested in healthy art and dignified aesthetic pursuit such as the rational restriction of art, the establishment of standards and the normal human nature.
