The political status of ethnic Chinese dropped sharply under Ne Win military rule in Myanmar from 1962 to 1988. The ethnic Chinese in Myanmar were discriminated as secondclass or thirdclass citizens, whose political rights were greatly restricted. Their political status deteriorated under the joint forces of "Burmese praetorian" regime, "Burmese socialist" ideology, class politics and nationalism.
