Rethinking the Concept of Mode of Production: Towards an Extension of Object of Political Economy

Mode of production (MOP) is the primary object of Marxist economics, which regards production relations as evolving, existing, and developing according to certain modes of production. Productive forces are not equal to modes of production, the former answering the question of what material elements are involved in production while the latter answer the question of how to combine the material elements with production. Contemporary modes of production have undergone epoch-making changes in both natural and social terms. These changes result in new phenomena and problems. It is argued that the basic categories expounded in The Capital be adhered to when we explore the new contents of those categories and conceptualize new categories to be included in the logic system of theoretical categories. Only in this way can we hope to promote a further development of Marxist political economy.
