MASS-DISTRIBUTION OF C-60 AND C-70 COALESCENCE PRODUCTS PRODUCED BY DIRECT LASER VAPORIZATION

Both C-60 and C-70 were found to be coalesced by direct laser vaporization in high vacuum and without any buffer gas. The time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectra of both positive and negative coalescence products are presented and the results show that C-60 and C-70 can be similarly coalesced in laser plasma to form larger fullerenes. The coalescence process is independent of the charge of the fullerenes but can be affected by the laser fluence and other experimental conditions. By analyzing the mass distribution of coalescence products and comparing them with the fullerenes generated from carbon nanotubes, aromatic compounds or amorphous carbon, it is suggested that the aggregates of C-60 and C-70 may have tubular configurations.
