Is Rural Society “Rite-Ruled Society”?

The relationship between rite and law has been developing throughout history. Generally speaking, there is no distinct dividing line between them. Mr. Fei Xiao tong defines traditional Chinese rural society as "society ruled by rite", because he used the definition of "rite"in both broad sense and narrow sense, his concept of "rite-ruled society" has a double meaning----society with no law and traditional society in its general sense. As we try to grasp the meaning of Mr. Fei's "rite-ruled society", we should correctly understand it as the society in which people rely mainly on tradition to meet the need of life rather than law, but not the society that does not need the assistance of law to maintain its social order absolutely.
