dc.description.abstractPhenol is a monomer widely used in petrochemical industry, agriculture and plastic industry. Phenol can be obtained from the partial oxidation of benzene and the procedure is simple. In 1988 Suzki et al.([1]) and Gubel et al.([2]) independently discovered a new kind of catalysts, HZSM-5 zeolites, for this reaction. The oxidation of benzene by nitrous oxide over the catalysts proceeded at 300-400 degrees C with the yield of phenol from 8% to 16%. Cao et al.([3]) reported that by using Fe2O3-CuO-MnO2/sepiolite as the catalyst and H2O2 as the oxidant, the conversion of benzene reached 36.26% and the selectivity for phenol was 93.45%. This paper presents for the first time a new catalyst, Fe2O3-La2O3 / HZSM-5, in which La2O3 acts as a promoter. This catalyst has been used for the hydroxylation of benzene to phenol, the maximum conversion of benzene was up to 40.2 % and the maximum selectivity for phenol was 94.0 %. The result shows this catalyst has a potential prospect of application.zh_CN
