Room temperature solid state synthesis and characterization of a new chromium thiophosphate Cr-4(P2S6)(3)

A new chromium thiophosphate Cr-4(P2S6)(3) was synthesized by solid state reaction between Na4P2S6. 6H(2)O and CrCl3. 6H(2)O at room temperature rather than by the ceramic method. The product was characterized by means of XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. XRD shows that Cr-4(P2S6)(3), isostructural with Ga-4(P2S6)(3), crystallizes in the monoclinic system with a = 0.8692(5) nm, b = 0.7562(6) nm, c = 0.8344(6) nm, and beta = 91.97(7)degrees. The Raman spectrum bears the characteristic peaks for the P2S64- anion group. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal the existence of a d(3)Cr(3+) cation, These results correspond to the charge balance Cr-4(3+)(P24+S62-)(3). (C) 1999 Academic Press.
