Phenomena, Causes and Tackling Strategies of Professional Female Under-Representation：In the Case of the Philosophy Field

【中文摘要】与男性相比,在哲学领域女性偏少是一个普遍的事实。对于这种性别不平等现象,人们提出了众多的假设,其中主要的原因有:从哲学本身看是哲学无用谬误;从社会环境看是女性不宜偏见;从女性自身看是能力欠缺歧视。应对哲学领域女性偏少的策略有:(1)正本清源:宣扬哲学之用;(2)打破成见:凸显女性成就;(3)揭示真相:女性胜任哲学。 借鉴对哲学专业女性偏少的分析模式,可以探讨任何专业中女性偏少或过多的现象、原因及其应对策略,从而推进专业领域的性别平等。 【Abstract】Compared with males, females in philosophy are widely under-represented. A large number of hypotheses have been put forward for gender inequality. The main reasons are: (1) the fallacy that philosophy is useless from the philosophical point; (2) bias against women perceived as unfit for philosophy from the point of the social environment; and (3) prejudice against women perceived as untalented from the point of women themselves. There are some strategies to address female under-representation in philosophy: (1) putting it right: to promote the usefulness of philosophy; (2) breaking the prejudice: to highlight female achievements; and (3) revealing the truth: to affirm that women are perfectly fit philosophy. With the use of the analysis mode of female under-representation in philosophy, we will be able to explore any phenomena, causes and tackling strategies of female under-representation or over-representation in order to promote gender equality in all professions.
