Women's Status in Academia：A Comparison Between China and Japan

【中文摘要】本文从历史和现状两个方面对中日两国高校中女性教师进行了比较分析。论文回顾了中日两国女性进入学术界的历史，在此基础上根据近25年来两国高校女性的人数及比例变化对两国女性在学术界中的生存状态进行了分析，并进一步比较分析了近年来 两国高校性别发展政策与措施。论文指出由于受儒家文化的影响，中日两国女性在学术界中的发展具有相似性，历史上经历了此消彼长的发展过程，新世纪又面临着共同的挑战;近年来日本院校层面的性别平等措施值得中国在现代大学制度建设中借鉴与参考。 【Abstract】This paper compared the women faculty in academia between China and Japan through analyses of history development and current situation. It first reviewed the history of women entering into school education and academia in both counties and then analyzed the status of women faculty according to the chronological change of the number and percentage from 1985 to 2009. Followed by detailed examination on recent policies and measures which have been taken in institutional level in both countries, it came to the conclusion that influenced deeply by the Confucius' gender culture in ancient times there were similarities in the development of women's faculty. They also encountered the same challenge nowadays, though women in academia appeared different levels in the history of development in both countries. In recent years, various measures have been taken in order to create gender equality environment in university level in Japan while China needs her universities to consider putting the gender equality awareness into the establishment of modern university system.
