Chinese-Language Newspapers and Magazines, Chinese Literati in Southeast Asia, and Metamorphosis of Southeast Asian Chinese Literature: From the May 4th Movement to the Anti-Japanese War
【Abstract】 Both modern Chinese literature and Southeast Asian Chinese literature are closely associated with Chinese-language newspapers and magazines. From the May 4 th Movement to the Anti-Japanese War, the influence of modern Chinese literature and art movements spread to Southeast Asia with the communications between Chinese and Southeast Asian cultural media and people-to-people exchanges between the two regions. Driven by the communication and advocacy of the editors of the Southeast Asian Chinese-language newspapers and magazines (mainly Chinese literati who had immigrated to Southeast Asia), the Southeast Asian Chinese literature community used Chinese-language newspapers and magazines as an important carrier and medium of literature. In this context, the community achieved the modern transformation of Southeast Asian Chinese literature from old-format literature to new vernacular literature. Additionally, the community played a role in promoting the new Southeast Asian literature (revolutionary literature) movement, the Nanyang-style literature movement, and the Anti-Japanese War literature movement. This effort advanced the development of modern Southeast Asian Chinese literature, eventually creating solid historical and cultural ties between China and Southeast Asia.
