On the Virtual History of Historical Plays
【Abstract】Virtual history is the basic feature of historical plays in the light of the relationship between historical plays and history. It refers to the representation of virtual history by some recurring objects with historical connotations. By virtual history, existing historical plays fall into two types: prototypes and non-prototypes. The prototypes are divided into fitted ones and variants. Virtual history means that a historical play is not about history itself; rather, it strives to represent history and attempts to obscure history and convince the audience of its plausibility in order to express the ideas that it wants in the name of history. The objectivity and reliability of historical plays to be widely recognized by the public are dependent on three factors – whether the playwright is in awe of history, whether the figures and events in the work convey rich meanings, and whether the work facilitates the entry of “history”into contemporary life. The most significant shortcoming in the longstanding dispute over the relationship between historical plays and history is the failure to recognize the “history”in historical plays as virtual history.
