Production of carbon nanotubes with different shapes by catalytic pyrolysis of methane

In the present work, different-shaped carbon nanotubes produced by catalytic pyrolysis of methane over Ni-catalysts at low temperature (500-700 degreesC) were observed by TEM. It was found that the outer and inner diameters of carbon nanotubes and the size and morphology of Ni-catalysts are mainly determined, which was strongly affected by the kind of catalyst precursors and the reaction temperature. The length of carbon nanotubes became short when the reaction temperature was decreased or the flow rate of methane was improved.
