On the Significance of Lin Huiyin: A Case Study of Women and Chinese Modernity

From the perspective of gender study, this paper examines Lin Huiyin's idiosyncratic life trajectory: her way of life in the manner of "walking along a new road in old shoes", as well as the identity anxiety throughout her life.Based on this study, it reinterprets two hotly-debated issues in Lin study: her relations with poet Xu Zhimo and the meaning of a "Mrs' s living room." Furthermore, it explores the intricate relations between the old and the new, the new woman and the patriarchal tradition in the transitional period of Chinese modernity, which transcend a simplified dichotomy; as well as the significance of the modern "parlour's culture" in the formation of the subjectivity of "new woman." In addition, this paper also makes an inquiry on the gender subjectivity in her work on architecture which has rarely been studied thus far, through which it delves into the possibility and the significance for the intervention of woman's experience into the formation of modern knowledge and intellectual tradition.
