Abstract

Sterol composition in the liver oils of common species of sharks and rays off southern Fujian coastal waters was extremely simple and cholesterol was the only component sterol present in all the livers analyzed The cholesterol content in the liver oils of these species ranged from 0 114%~0 541%.Cholesterol content in the liver oils of Scoliodon sorrakowah could change with the physiological stages of the animals Among embryo, juvenile and adult male fish, the liver cholesterol content of embryo was highest, and that of immature fish with poorly differentiated testicles maintained at a high level, while that of adult fish was relatively low During spawning season, cholesterol content of female S sorrakowak at gestation stage decreased apparently, then increased after ending gestation. The fluctuation of cholesterol content might be correspond to growth and reproductive activities of the animals.
